If you are trying to cover an old fence, add privacy, tidy up a pool area or give the garden a warmer look, bamboo panels are one of the quickest ways to do it.

Choose the Bamboo Panel Size That Suits the Job

Every yard is a bit different. Some people just want to hide an old fence. Some need privacy from neighbours. Some are finishing a pool area, side path, shed wall or garden screen.

Use this as a starting point, and call me if you want help working it out.

Size Best for Notes
1800 x 900mm Standard fence-height jobs, quick fence refreshes and garden screens This is the standard fence height. If you are not sure, odds are this is the size you are looking for.
2000 x 1000mm A little extra height to break the eyeline Good when you want just that bit more privacy without going all the way to a full-height screen.
2400 x 1000mm The neighbour's-be-gone privacy choice This is the true privacy option. Even a kid on a trampoline is going to have a hard time looking over the top.
Full round 2000 x 1000mm When the front and the back both matter Good for shower screens, feature builds, or when you care about the neighbour's side enough to pay extra for both sides to look nice. Full-round stock is limited, so call Dom first if you need this option.

Not sure how many panels you need? Send your fence length, height and a couple of photos, and I will help you work out the panel count.

The black smoked panels have more of a brown smoked tone in real life. If colour matching matters, call Dom before ordering.

Bamboo is a natural product, so pole diameters vary. The poles generally range from around 70mm to 120mm. If you want a particular look or pole size, give me a shout and you can come to the warehouse to pick and choose at your leisure.

Easy Ways to Use Bamboo Fence Panels

Bamboo panels are a quick way to change the feel of a space without rebuilding the whole yard.

  • Covering tired timber, Colourbond, masonry, pool or wire fences.
  • Creating more privacy around pools and outdoor areas.
  • Screening neighbours, bins, sheds or service areas.
  • Adding a warmer natural look to patios and garden walls.
  • Creating a feature wall or backdrop for plants.
  • Finishing a fence with bamboo capping for a cleaner top edge and a little extra protection from rain entering the end grain.

If you can put a screw into it, you can usually cover it with bamboo. Pre-drill first and use galvanised or stainless steel screws where possible. For wire fencing, or spots where screws are not practical, zip ties or cable ties can help hold the panel in place.

If you are covering pool fencing, make sure the pool fence still meets the safety requirements for your property. The bamboo is screening, not a replacement for a compliant pool barrier.

A Few Things Worth Checking First

  • The height you need for privacy.
  • The length of the fence or wall you want to cover.
  • Whether you want a particular bamboo pole size or look.
  • Whether the existing fence or frame is solid enough to take panels.
  • Whether you need bamboo capping for a finished top edge.
  • Whether the panels will sit in full sun, rain or a protected area.
  • Whether pickup or delivery is easier for you.

If you are not sure, send photos before buying. It is much easier to sort out the panel count before the panels are on the trailer.

Basic Fixing and Cutting Advice

You can fix bamboo panels to Colourbond, timber, masonry, pool fencing, wire fencing, or anything solid enough to take a screw.

The best fixing points are the rails along the middle where the strings run. The strings are mostly for looks; the bamboo is actually screwed individually to the rails behind. If you can get your screws into those rails, that is the strongest way to fix the panel.

Pre-drill before putting screws into bamboo. Decking screws are my recommended fixing because they are made for outdoor use, do not corrode easily, and do not stand out as much. If the screws will be visible, use a decking screw with a coloured head so it looks tidier.

If screws are not practical, especially on wire fencing, zip ties or cable ties can help secure the panel. Try to line them up with the rails as well.

If you are covering pool fencing, make sure the fence still meets the safety requirements for your property. The bamboo is screening, not a replacement for a compliant pool barrier.

Cutting panels down is pretty straightforward. Undo the strings where you need to trim, then cut the rails to size. Once you start working with them, they behave a lot like timber and are easy to handle. Use a fine-toothed saw. I recommend a hand saw because it gives you more control and leaves a cleaner cut.

Pickup From Coolum Beach or SE QLD Delivery

Pickup is available from Coolum Beach on the Sunshine Coast.

Friday morning is the only time I am guaranteed to be there. The rest of the week I am in and out with deliveries, so give me a shout before you come and we will arrange a time.

Local delivery is available across South East Queensland, including Sunshine Coast, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Noosa, Gympie, Ipswich and nearby areas.

Local SE QLD delivery is currently from $80.

I do the deliveries myself wherever I can. It helps keep the delivery price down, and it means the panels are handled by someone who actually knows what they are.

If checkout does not show a delivery option for your address, call Dom on 0447 626 689 and I can check the best option.

Not Sure How Many Panels You Need?

Send through the fence length, the height you are trying to cover, a couple of photos of the area, and whether you want pickup or delivery.

I can help you work out the panel count, whether capping makes sense, and the easiest way to get the panels to you.

Looking After Bamboo Outside

Bamboo is a natural product, so it will weather if it is left in the sun and rain without care.

If you want it to keep looking good, treat it like outdoor timber: keep it clean, let it dry properly, and oil it with decking oil at least once a year.

I recommend decking oil, oil-based if you can. If you have a lot of bamboo panels to do, you can spray it on with a paint sprayer. For smaller jobs, grab a large disposable brush from the hardware store and give the bamboo a good coat.

Bamboo panels should easily last around 3 years outdoors, depending on exposure and care. With a good coat of decking oil keeping the sun off the bamboo, they can keep going for years. You could get 10 to 15 years out of them without any trouble if they are looked after.

The more exposed the panel is, the more important maintenance becomes. Full Queensland sun will be harder on bamboo than a protected patio or shaded garden area.

Common Questions

Can I pick up bamboo panels?

Yes. Pickup is available from Coolum Beach on the Sunshine Coast.

Friday morning is the only time I am guaranteed to be there. The rest of the week I am in and out with deliveries, so give me a shout before you come and we will arrange a time. No problem.

Do you deliver bamboo panels?

Yes. The Bamboo Warehouse offers local delivery across SE Queensland, with local delivery currently from $80.

I do the deliveries myself wherever I can to help keep the delivery price down.

If you are outside the standard delivery area, call Dom on 0447 626 689 for a quote.

What size bamboo panel should I buy?

If you are not sure, start with the 1800 x 900mm panels. They are the standard fence-height option and suit most quick fence refreshes.

Choose 2000 x 1000mm if you want a little more height to break the eyeline. Choose 2400 x 1000mm if privacy is the main goal and you want the neighbour's-be-gone option.

Full round panels are for jobs where the front and back both matter, like shower screens, feature builds or places where the neighbour's side will be seen too.

Can bamboo panels be used for privacy?

Yes. Bamboo panels are commonly used to add privacy to gardens, fences, pools, patios and outdoor areas.

Do I need bamboo capping?

You do not always need it, but capping gives the top of the fence a cleaner finished look and can help make the job look more complete. It also gives a slight protective effect because rain is not going straight down into the end grain of the bamboo.

How long do bamboo panels last?

Bamboo is a natural outdoor product, so lifespan depends on the quality of the panel, exposure, installation and maintenance.

As a guide, bamboo panels should easily last around 3 years outdoors, depending on exposure and care. If they are looked after with decking oil, they can go on and on. With a good coat of decking oil keeping the sun off the bamboo, 10 to 15 years is realistic.

Can I attach bamboo panels to an existing fence?

Yes. That is the most common use for them.

You can screw them straight to the fence, always using a pre-drilled hole. Decking screws are best if possible because they are made for outdoor use, do not rust easily and are not too flashy.

The best fixing points are the rails along the middle where the strings run. The strings are mostly for looks; the bamboo is screwed individually to the rails behind.

You can fix bamboo panels to Colourbond, timber, masonry, pool fencing, wire fencing, or anything solid enough to take a screw.

If screws are not practical, zip ties or cable ties can also help hold the panel in place. Line them up with the rails where possible.
